Re-birth of Supers

In 1999 the supers returned. It started out as a small trickle, but by 2005 the number of super vastly increased (though still less than 1% of the population, even including super scientists). Mostly, the supers just suddenly gain mysterious powers; this is usually attributed to mutations, radiations or some mystical force. There are also a great deal more people who can use actual magic. Science has made great leaps and bounds during this period which have lead to more people with super like abilities, though strangely, people seem to be having great difficulty recreating most of these technologies and experiments.

With the supers came the flashy costumes and the high profile heroes and villains. Both groups enjoy the publicity. The public tends to like the super battles, though not in their backyard. One of most rewarding jobs currently is being on a camera crew taping this; it makes damn good television. The government has sponsored some of the super groups, most notably the FBI. Also, some rich benefactors have also started funding hero super groups. Of course, organized crime has also gone about hiring super.

Though, with some exceptions, normal people tend to fear the supers. The majority of supers tend to stay in mundane life to fit in. This can be a problem, as with their powers, the supers tend to be exceptional. There have been a number of scandals involving some celebrity turning out to be a super. This has lead to the rise of superhumans rights groups, the term they are using is "metahuman" to avoid the implication that the supers are better than normals. Congress is currently working on anti-discrimination laws for metahumans.
