... KABOOM!! Everybody rushes into the bomb shelter, Raf getting a little singed on the way in. After a very quick round-table, it's decided that Raf's going to try to get into the unconscious guys' heads. He finds that they got a message that "there was trouble with the shipment" and that the shipment had to do with drugs. The guy we're "interrogating" seems to know nothing about the president. He does know a little about Rutger, but mostly just that he gets paid clandestinely for random things dealing with drugs. Raf manages to get into the other guy's head, to find that this one sometimes picks up the mail, and one of their "clients" has recently sent them a "package".

It's suddenly noted that it's quite the coincidence that there happens to be a bomb shelter. With working electricity. And canned foods. And a desk with phone and some filing cabinets. The phone however, does not work. Sticking out of one of the desk drawers is a not-dusty "invoice". Apparently, you need to keep paperwork on drug deals. And there is a recurring address on some of the paperwork that hits our brains: Miami. Also, Rutger's been invited to a special effects show this weekend in Rochester, NY. And the unopened package from upstairs came from their favorite client, who is from a POB in Springfield, MA.

Inside the package (which is a prepaid USPS box) is stacks of money (yippity-skippity!!) and a note indicating that this first part of the "payment" will be followed by more "payment" when the "goods" are "delivered". The note is not signed.

Sammy takes a "step" outside to inspect the fire's spread - it's mostly just a couple of small burns, blown out windows, but no blown off roof. The party then takes off without the hostages, but with the money (~$10k in 20s). The thugs have MI DLs, and a T-bird car key. Outside happens to be a T-bird ready to go. Andrea grabs the keys, everyone hops in, Sammy taking up pretty much no space at all, and the radio gets turned on. Country or rap seems to be what's on the radio, but we quickly move it to an AM news station. In the glove compartment happens to be (quite good) insurance and registration belonging to one of the thugs we IDd. We're on the road to Rochester!

When we stop for fuel, Raf takes care of any cameras, and we pay in our snazzy (non-sequential) $20s. We manage to get out of Michigan, take a quick trip through Ohio, and a very quick stopover in Pennsylvania, leading to the backwoods of New York, with a couple of tolls along the way. During our idyllic drive, we hear things on the radio about the presidential assassination that we mostly already know, except that the bullet that killed the president was the same bullet that killed Lisa Anderson. Our high school prank made the news, and the warehouse eventually hits.

Batavia, NY is where we happen to find a quick, easy base-of-operations-type motel, where we spend the night.

August 6, 2010 Friday

We check Rutger's phone for the hotel he might be staying in - we find a few 585 area code numbers, along with an incoming 816 almost immediately after the POTUS assassination, which is from Kansas City, and including a Rochester hotel. Raf attempts (successfully) to hack into his voicemail, to find nothing after the Kansas City call. Prior to that are two saved VMs talking about the Rochester convention, professionally. This actually happens to tell us that he's expected to be, at nine o'clock, Saturday night, on East Field setup area "C".

On the convention website, we learn that a nifty pyro show is happening on East Field at ten on Saturday. We actually go into the convention on Friday, to get a feel for the place, know where to hide, run, take the guy, etc. We choose the kettlecorn place nearest the East field to meet if we get split up. The convention center is a huge field in Seneca Park surrounded by a rent-a-fence, next to Genesee River.

Rutger's special effects presentation involves pyrotechnics, sound, and stunts, and is probably the show at 10:30pm starring Distortion, Soundwave, and Ironside. We find a central box where technicians would run the show from, hopefully including Rutger. Sammy takes a look inside, and finds that while there isn't a show going on right now, there are five desks with judging cards or whatnot on them. He does find that the technicians will be in the wings, running their shows. We take off, pick up a little wireless camera and an iPhone (rev 2, assigned to Raf's true identity). A little after midnight, Sammy installs the camera into the technician booth, making sure to plug it into an unobtrusive place.

August 7, 2010 Saturday

Prior to the competition, the group sits down with food (and booze) to watch the entryway to the technician booth. At 8:50pm, Rutger enters the booth, recognized by the group because of his disturbing glasses. Raf takes the opportunity to jump into his brain, and finds that Rutger's plan is to light many fun things on fire. Safely. Raf proceeds to "interrogate" the guy's brain, to this effect:

  • Primary motive at this event: Win the pyro contest!
  • What he knows about the POTUS assassination: He was merely informed about the scapegoats, and made sure to "clean" them up.
  • Who is his major drug contact: No information.
  • After today, what's his next big priority: Find another warehouse.
  • What area: No information.
  • Who asked to do the cleanup: GM will answer later.
  • Does he have contacts inside the guvment: Nope.
  • What his full range of powers are: Nauseate AoE and Teleport.
  • Where's he staying: Marriott room 314.

With this much info, we decide to watch the show, then head to his room. The shows are pretty nifty, and about fifteen minutes long, with same time between shows. For Rutger's show, we're guessing that the stuntman on stage is Ironside, and the sound and effects is pretty snazzy. Raf attempts to jump into Ironside's mind to root around for his powers. He seems to be your basic tanker, with well above average strength and stamina.

After their show, we head to the Marriott and Sammy lets everyone into Room 314. It happens to be a suite with two separate bedrooms and a living room area. It is conjectured that the three competitors are all staying in this one suite. We find nothing interesting about Soundwave or Ironside, but we find Rutger's pistol in his suitcase, along with a large amount of cash (~$1k in small bills). Andrea takes the pistol, which is a "heavy pistol +4".

Raf plugs himself into the security cameras to watch for our quarry's arrival. Around three in the morning, we see them come in at the elevator, and we all take positions.
