28 April 1894 (late afternoon, Thursday)

For a quick recap, please see Gazette II. As the group is thinking, Cliff suddenly remembers that one Georgina MacGarth, a spirualist of sorts, is currently staying at P.O.W.E.R.S. and might know something about how to deal with this whole... spiritual... thing. That we're dealing with.

*typist sips some coffee*

To maintain a semblance of control over the situation, our heroes move the cursed (Donald and Violet and the mummy to the P.O.W.E.R.S. office. Before doing so, Donald writes three copies of an invitation to PHQ to the other people who happen to be cursed, then sends them by courier. Apparently, we have Butler-Bane-in-a-Box, bearing bandage-bound body.

Malcolm heads up to see if he can bring Georgina down. And... he succeeds. As she enters the room, we notice that her eyes don't really focus on any one thing.

  • Georgina: I believe the entity you've mentioned is the mummy itself.
  • Cliff: Can you talk to it?
  • GM: It's not... talking to me at all. Whatever it is, it's very powerful and rather pissed off.
  • CS: How can you perfectly rewrap a mummy?
  • GM: Rewrapping aside, we need to reseal the coffin. I'll need time and the other links to the mummy.
  • CS: The what?
  • GM: The other cursed people. It will take me most of the night to get the ritual ready, so you have the time. I will want all four of you here while we do the ritual. I'm pretty sure there is going to be... unpleasantness. He will not want to be restrained again.
  • CS: Will he be corporeal?
  • GM: I don't think so. We will need all five of them to be here for the ritual though.
  • Milton: Do we know what to expect?
  • CS: You've faced them, Milton. Can you build something to help us fight them?
  • MG: Hrm... (excited) I can make something based on the flashbangs... with a fresnel lens... or a heliotic oscillation by stimulated emission of radiation...

As Milton leaps off to build his device, Hazel Braddock, Howard Carter, and Peter Hix all show up as per their letters. As everyone gathers around the mummy, and Georgina prepares to prepare the ritual, the shades are drawn and several candles are lit. As the lights are turned down, Sophia positions herself as close as possible to the gas main so she can bring it up quickly if something shows up. Eventually, the séance starts to begin to emerge. The six people involved join hands as Georgina starts to chant. The candles... flicker.

Suddenly! Everyone except Milton (the guy with the light gun) notice the shadows start to materialize from the West Wall. Fei Hung immediately interposes himself between the shadow and the cultists chanters, which was good because it goes at them with its cold-blade! Fei Hung manages to take the strike in stride, thankfully. It's not that bad. And it gets better when Sofia blares magical bright lights directly at the shadow-beast, stunning it dramatically!

Cliff makes sure he is between the opposite wall and the séance in case anything else comes out of the east side. At this moment, Milton notices the thing, fires his brand new toy at the shadow, and sears off an arm! Fei Hung remains between the shadow and the chanters, in a very strong defensive stance. Agape (who's been hiding in the southern end of the room) gets shaken by a shadow stepping through the wall, and disappears under a chair. In retaliation, Sophia makes another colorspray attack both shadows this time! The shadow with a disability shimmers into nothing, but the new one is still... floating. Milton fires his HOSER again, vaporizing the second shadow! Fei Hung sees that his immediate opponents are taken care of, and by process of elimination heads to the north side.

Several seconds go by without anything attacking... Right up until a chair up and leaps towards Hix! Milton manages to react quickly enough to fire his HOSER at the chair, but to no avail. Hix is knocked out, causing Georgina to give a call to "Join the circle!" Fei Hung takes this literally enough, jumping into the ritual and fairly obviously moving chi into the ritual itself, and Georgina's spellcasting specifically. Sophia takes this cue to also get close to the circle (though not in the circle) and apply her own magickal effects to protect the group with a powerful reflecting protection spell.

As Sofia lets go of her link to Agape to power the protection, Agape's eyes turn red and she leaps at Violet, claws extended and yowling! Milton jumps forward, grabs the cat with his big steam gauntlets, and pulls her off of Violet. Agape's eyes return to their normal color... Where did it go?

Cliff! His eyes turn red, and wow he's angry at Donald! He steps over and decks the guy with his full strength, but finds him very difficult to hit because of Sophia's protection, doing minimal damage. Sofia diverts some of her concentration to mentally lift the 1-ton man and gingerly place him in the corner of the room. At which point, Cliff manages to actually shake off the mummy's control, Milton drops the cat, and a shadow appears in the east!

Milton tries to position himself so he doesn't shoot anyone except the shadow, but misses anyway! The shadow slides over towards Carter, and actually manages to strike him through Sophia's shield, leaving a cold feeling behind in both Carter and the shield. Cliff sees this, rushes around the table, and focusing every effort to strike into the shadow-realm strikes at the shadow! It dissipates into nothing, leaving Cliff with a very cold feeling in his bronzed fist.

The s&eaccute;ance reaches a fevered crescendo! The mummy's eyes suddenly glow red for a second, then the lid of the coffin slams down, causing the Arabic to reseal and a bunch of the heiroglyphics to glow blue for a moment before disappearing. Perhaps forever...

  • Howard Carter: This coffin didn't actually have a name on it. It was however a much more recent coffin than any in the area we were digging.
  • CS: How much more recent?
  • HC: Past the dynasty that used the valley we've been researching.
  • CS: But still ancient?
  • HC: Oh yes. Certainly not recent-recent.

Cliff thinks a bit... there should be no reason for Arabic written around a mummy's coffin. Violet said as much, but the really odd part is that the hieroglyphs were written by someone not fluent in Egyptian. A rubbing is taken by Howard of all the markings, in case we see them again, or whatnot. The coffin is eventually moved to the London Museum with a big "Warranty void if removed" "Do not open by order of P.O.W.E.R.S." label wrapped in such a way that it's next to impossible to break open. In addition, the group marks the label with their signatures/symbols/whatever.

Hix leaves the place with a bump on his head, Violet leaves with many cat scratches, and Howard leaves with an extreme chill. Donald takes with him a mark of getting smacked by Mr. Metal. Fei Hung, just to make sure, checks everyone's mind for the eyes - gone. At the end of it all, Malcolm Fletcher comes in, opens the drapes, then compliments the group on a job well done.

29 April 1894 (afternoon, Friday)

  • Malcolm: I know it's an odd request, but would you all like to see the opening of the Tower Bridge this Sunday? I received a rather... disturbing letter saying that the Tower Bridge "must not open" - in a weird hand. Unsigned. I'd like to have a P.O.W.E.R.S. presence to stop anything strange happening. It was pinned to the door of the engineers who are building the bridge.

Sofia takes a look at it. "The Tower Bridge musst not open" has a suspicious spelling, and an untaught hand, written on blueprint paper, with India ink.

Our heroes will follow up on this. Next time...
